A ginger utopia in the Netherlands

On Sunday 2 September 2012 I was surrounded by thousands of gingers. It was beautiful, strange and surreal. I felt like I was in a science fiction movie – something like Gattaca. A ginger utopia.

I recently travelled to Breda, a small city a few hours away from Amsterdam in the Netherlands for the Redhead Days festival on 2 September 2012. Yes, some might say it is obsessive to travel half way across the world to collect more gingers – I would tend to agree. However, I was not the only one who wanted to experience an imagined community and brotherhood. There were gingers from all over the world – from New Zealand, Australia, one other South African!, America, Israel, Greece, Italy and Martinique. There were plenty of British, Dutch and German gingers too. It was so wonderful to be surrounded by strangers whose only reason to love one another was because we had the same hair colour.

The primary purpose of such a gathering was to break a Guinness Book of World Records of the most ginger people together. And so it was – we all gathered together and in the end 1255 redheads were recorded! See an awesome video by Jaco Scholtz here.

I also set up a photo booth to continue collecting gingers in the same fashion I have been for the last 2 years! I managed to photograph 56 gingers in 4 hours at the booth! Record time for me 🙂

I met some amazing glowing-haired people over the weekend, as well as very briefly during the photo shoot. Thank you to everyone who was involved and who supported I collect gingers!
