A brief history

There is a group of people living amongst us. The first evidence of them can be found 600,000 years ago – 400,000 years before modern man’s entry into the world. They are found on all continents. They appear with all skin tones. They can be male or female, tall or short, fat or thin.

Many powerful people have belonged to this group. Thomas Clarkson, organiser of the British anti-slavery movement, was one.  So was the biblical King David, recorded as somehow defeating an opponent much stronger than he. Thomas Jefferson, principal writer of the American Declaration of Independence, belonged to the group too. So did Napoleon. Ramesses the Great. Van Gogh. Elizabeth I. Galileo. Malcolm X. Cleopatra, possibly.

Indeed, they have been found amongst the leadership of many of the great revolutions of the world. The ancient Egyptians held some as Gods. Abrahamic tradition maintains the Messiah will be the descendent of one. The only non-monarchical leader in the British Isles’ history belonged to this group.  Barbarossa was included amongst their ranks. So was the Prime Minister who led the world into confronting Nazism. Traces of their history can be found in ancient movements. They were amongst the Yuezhi, founders of the Kushan empire. Xenophanes records the Thracians as having gods that looked like them.  The Tocharians who destroyed the Greco-Bactrian kingdom of Alexander the Great included them. Polynesians worshipped them. One of the great leaders of black consciousness belonged. Imagine that – a group that could infiltrate ancient and modern movements, black and white, African and Asian and European.

They remain small. At most, 2% of the world’s population is aware that they are part of this people. Up to 40% may carry the gene, unaware of their heritage, with the only possibility of realising their identity found if they meet a partner also holding this genetic legacy. Perhaps this has been for the best, for this people have also been persecuted.  What about them was so feared? The Middle Ages saw them recorded as vampires and witches. The Malleus Maleficarum suggests they may be werewolves. Brothers Grimms’ fables depict them as wild. The Inquisition saw them burned. It is curious, therefore, that modern science has suggested that their pain thresholds may be different to other humans. Some research shows a higher tolerance for heat-related pain. How intriguingly useful for a group who were regularly tied to the stake.

These are the brief sketches of what we know – a vague history, truth be told. Despite being  recorded in every continent, no evidence has been found to suggest that, until recently, any group in one area knew of the existence of the others. In a time of social media and increasing interconnectedness, this has begun to change. Discrimination continues until the present day.  In 2009 a British boy killed himself after being taunted for being part of the group.  That same year, three children in Calabasas were attacked. Perhaps this is why people could not take it any more.

Some say their time has come.

It’s kind of weird to know that there were Gingers 400,000 years ago when the earth is only 6000 years old.

It is obvious that you do not know what you are talking about. Before making such blatantly uneducated comments, why don’t you do some research. “Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago, and life appeared on its surface within its first billion years.”

        Hi Chaerlz,
Thanks so much for your comments!
The piece was written as a ‘selective’ history therefore it was not that important for it to be historically correct. Through this, with its potential errors and presumptions, I am critiquing the narratives of history in general. Every history has been told through a specific perspective, often by those in power, in order to achieve its own objectives.
I’m sure there are more inaccuracies here, but for my purposes it does not matter 🙂
        Thanks!
        Anthea

Archaic Homo sapiens, the forerunner of anatomically modern humans, evolved between 400,000 and 250,000 years ago.

Anatomically modern humans evolved from archaic Homo sapiens in the Middle Paleolithic, about 200,000 years ago.

Red hair occurs naturally on approximately 1–2% of the human population and appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.

    AWESOME IDEA!!!!!!!!!!
Have you noticed though how similar some of you guys look.
Is it possible to trace back far enough to find out if there is a common DNA link?

Malcolm X was most definitely NOT a red head! (look at photos) Napoleon was described as having dark lank hair. I seriously doubt that Ramesses or Cleopatra were red heads either. Where did you get your information from? I think its most misleading.

    Redheads rock…!

Would it not be more appropriate to say “Cinnamon” insteads of “Ginger” as the hair color has a tendancy to be more pronounced in the darker tones such as Copper or Paprika. Plus, Cinnamon is more attractive and tastier than Ginger. LOL
