Ginger Classification System

Pantone stripAs part of my imagined narrative of a ‘ginger utopia’, I decided that it was human nature to ‘other’ and create hierarchy and difference. So, even in a single-raced world, there would always be the need for humanity to say ‘I am more ginger than you’ – to create sub-classifications.

In my exhibition, the 500 gingers were grouped according to hair colour –  by my own system of classification to define who belongs where.

I created a rough ‘pantone strip’ as a reference for myself whilst grouping the gingers.

The range is:

Grey/Silver

Strawberry Blonde

Light Orange

Orange

Burnt Orange

Copper

Red

Dark Red

Auburn

Dark Aurburn

as a little girl I was truly a red. now I tend to roll a little closer to the copper. Of course now I have to help nature out a little bit to as it goes with being a red head, you must embrace the ever changing shades.

Red when I was born and gradually changed to Auburn as I became an adult.

Sometimes I henna my hair to get the vibrancy back!

I am a “Strawberry Blonde”: light-reddish blonde with different colors of gold, red and auburn streaks. My eyebrows and eyelashes, as well as the hair on my arms and legs is BLONDE. The hair on my legs and other non-visible areas is super soft. Don’t have to shave much. In fact on my whole body, I have only 2-3 non-red hairs. Even my underarms are a brownish red. I have freckles too. 🙂
I’m a fifth generation (or so) American of mixed Anglo-Euro creed. My paternal grandmother had red-red hair. My baby brother has deep auburn hair and dark freckles. Our six other siblings all have light brown or brunette hair. One sister had a carrot top daughter with blue eyes. ;). I heard some believe we redheads are the ancestors of ancient aliens! I heard we have a strange DNA code. Has anyone else heard of that?
